On the occasion of Geoff McFetridge’s exhibition Rust Drinkers (December 10, 2022 - February 22, 2023), Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a screen-printed poster in harmony with automotive themes strung throughout the show’s body of work. Growing up in Calgary, Canada, McFetridge notes how cars were an essential part of his upbringing, the need for transportation in his town dictating most everything he could and could not do. The same goes for a place like Detroit, as well as “car-centric” Los Angeles where the artist currently resides, the show an homage of sorts to suburbia and McFetridge’s experiences growing up in such an environment.
More subtly, the poster and exhibition at large allude to Michigan’s rich history in Mid-Century Modern design. The poster was printed at the same shop in Zeeland, Michigan that produced Herman Miller’s picnic posters in the 1970s. Having worked with legendary designers like George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, Miller’s name is synonymous with modern furniture, and the company produced pieces that would become timeless classics of industrial design.
