Portrait of Amanda Nguyen, activist and 2019 Nobel Peace Price nomination
"A powerful symbol of hope for a new generation" - TED fellows
"It’s important to make sure that every protection is in place for people who suffer from sexual assault and that they receive justice. Amanda Nguyen is re-writing the law so that rape kits aren’t being discarded by law enforcement after 6 months. I respect Amanda’s willingness to fight for an important cause. She’s a great role model for a young generation, and proof that one person can make a huge difference. Additionally, we can all use our voices and vote to move things further in the right direction. When I met Amanda, I was very moved when she told me that while she was at school in Harvard, she saw a poster I put on the street of my wife who happens to be part Asian. She said that she was moved because it was one of the first times she saw an Asian individual depicted in an iconic way within contemporary art and she felt represented. I didn’t know Amanda had that experience with my work until after I completed this portrait of her celebrating her efforts as an activist. It's an amazing full circle coincidence that makes my portrait feel like it was meant to be." -Shepard
